Master of Property!
So what else have I been up to?
An L.A. production recently shot a couple of days on location in Rhode Island. I got hired as Second Unit Prop Master. It was really fun. The scenes were a wedding reception by the ocean.
We created a fake hors d'oeuvres buffet for the "guests" and decorated the wedding tent.
Some of the food is real, some of it were things we faked to stay within our budget.
For example, the scallops were really white potatoes cut to look like scallops and drenched in lemon juice.
We used watered down apple juice to look like white wine.
Is that caviar??
Nope, it's tiny glass beads. Don't eat!
Here's our set decoration while the crew is setting up to shoot.
Multiple takes means multiple plate set ups for the female lead.

It's electric! (boogie woogie woogie)
Energy Management Intro Animation from Cat Marshall on Vimeo.
My most recent freelance project. I crafted and animated the motion graphics/text for this video (not including the company logo) for Animal, LLC and their client. This was part a larger project which included 5 other similar videos for a website. The copy was provided by the company and we used stock music.
Busy spring!
Ok, I'm back! It's been a busy busy busy springtime, and boom! It's summer! I've been back from the roadtrip for quite a while now and have been continuing to work on it as the Assistant Editor. The time on the road was a 24-hour workday, our little RV traversing the country at a breakneck speed. Obviously, I never had a minute to post anything from the road, but here's a little taste of what went on.
Interviewing a family on their front porch in Martinsburg, Ohio.
Interviewing people along the swollen Mississippi in Memphis, Tennessee.
Sunset on the Mississippi

Road trip!
Leaving this morning for a two week adventure! I'm crossing the country via big RV with the production company The 989 Project to film a documentary about American economics and politics. I'm working as the Assistant Editor and probably other things as needed. Oh me, oh my, it should at least be a sight seeing thrill-ride if nothing else!
I will try to post some photos and updates from the road. See you in a fortnight, Rhode Island!

Bryant University- Promotional Video
Here's the video I made at Animal Studio for Bryant University. I did the graphic design and the motion graphics animation. There's a higher quality version here. Eric Weindel helped with the digital effects and we got a pro illustrator for the drawings and a musician to score it. (If you're interested, you can also see the storyboard I made for it beforehand.)
Doodles
Yeah, I'm a doodler. Here's some of them.
J-U-N-K-E-Y, Why? because he's given up! M-O-U-S-E!
I like this ink drawing. I'm currently working on a graphic story in this style.

Factory shoot
We recently wrapped up principal photography on the short film. Here's some pictures of the harmonica factory set, which we shot in an old mill building in Pawtucket.
Here's the before:
(That's Bob Lucas in the picture, the director.)
We built some scenery flats to close the space in...
...and faux-painted them to match the bead board walls that were already there.
Finally, we dress to impress!
Tada! Welcome to the Lucas&Co. Harmonica factory.

Gouache and Storytelling
Here are some gouache and ink paintings I did a little while back to practice with color and narrative.
This is a little old lady and her pet robot stegosaurus. She's mad at him for sitting on the barn and he's sooooo ashamed.
This is one of the evil alien conspirators bent of enslaving the human race.
This is a vampire syringe from hell. Not even your doctor can save you!

Black Maria Film and Video Festival
Just got back from the screening of the traveling Black Maria Film and Video Festival at the RISD auditorium. Cycle of Love won a third place "Director's Choice" award and was screened second to last in the line up. I was invited on stage and got a t-shirt and John Columbus, the director, asked me some questions.
John told me that the film has been very well received where he's screened it. I'm really thankful for the honor and proud to be part of the Director's Choice group which included my professor Brain Papciak's Steeples, the FAV department head John Terry's documentary tour of the Colosseum, and Dennis Tupicoff's Chainsaw!
I first saw Chainsaw three years ago at the Ottawa International Animation Festival and it blew my mind, as it did once again tonight. Awesome. My other favorites tonight were The Burning Wigs of Sedition, by Anna Fitch, which won the first place Stellar Prize in the open style category. It was the most far out bit of debauchery I've seen in quite a while, a steampunky mix of street theater and joyous anachronism. And for a perfect tie-in to the festival itself, La Premiere by Nick & Michael Regalbuto, was a fabulous narrative about in the invention of the Lumiere Cinematograph. Beautiful and entertaining, (though perhaps not entirely historically accurate?). This won the People's Choice award.
Check out the rest of the winners.
Oh yeah, Stanley Pickle also kicked ass.
